About the Name

Rock. Paper. Swans.

It's funny how once we give ourselves space and room to breathe, somehow our life takes on a new kind of clarity.  Letting things go and doing nothing seems like the antithesis of getting things done, right?  But in reality, it is taking on too much and moving too fast that often gets in the way of true "progress".  It took some time to feel out the underlying current of this blog and where it was taking me.  But by stepping out and looking in, the message became crystal clear.  A life grounded in nature and art has been the thread connecting my days this whole time.

When first starting out on this blogging adventure, I was a brand new mom to two and had just left my tenured teaching position to pursue creative pursuits and motherhood full-time.  Well, let me tell you folks, while the community that formed around this blog was ( and is) amazing, the amount of balls I was trying to juggle in addition to blogging was not.  I had tried to blog, author a book, run a photography business, a professional art business, all the while raising two little people every day.  Um, yeah, needless to say something had to give, because stress was definitely creeping in and that's not good for anybody.

Finally, after three years of trying to work late hours, sleep less, and do more, I hit a wall, emotionally, physically, and mentally.  I took a step back and took a break.  Hence, the long stretch of no posts here.

During my six month hiatus from blogging, I discovered Ayurveda, and have fallen in love with this beautiful ancient system of self-care and holisitic living. Through slowing way down, and stopping pretty much every professional pursuit, I've opened myself up to new opportunities pretty effortlessly, that are falling in line with my priorities and passions.  I feel better than I've felt in ages.  And all the while, the creative and natural, backbone to our days has stayed strong.

The name of this site, "Rock. Paper. Swans." is personal yet universal at the same time.

ROCKS settle us in to the earth that holds our every step.  They also happen to be my six year old son's favorite thing to collect, while also reflecting the grounded nature of his personality.
