NATURAL RESET: Flying Solo
NATURAL RESET CHALLENGES
WEEK 2: FLYING SOLO
March 1 - March 7
Get Outside BY YOURSELF everyday for a week.
Reconnect. (even if only for a few minutes)
This challenge is interesting. Interesting to me for a few reasons. The first, of course, is when will I find this window of time? Can it be done. The second, what will I do outdoors, alone. The third, what will I gain from these short trips outside every day?
There are plenty of studies out there touting the psychological benefits of being outdoors. You also hear about the links between connecting with the natural world and an increase in creativity, a decrease in stress, and improved overall health. But does standing in your driveway after the kids go to bed count?! It's not exactly forest bathing but can it still give us a tiny dose of nature medicine. Will the natural reset button still get pressed?
WHEN?
To address the first question of, "when will I get out", I guess that all depends on your schedule. For me, since my kids are young, I can't exactly leave them inside and say, "hey, stay here mom will be right back"! So, if I'm going to step out, they will either have to be at school / nap or in bed for the night on most days. There is also the potential for grandparents and spouses to allow us a few minutes. Be creative. Getting up earlier then the kids is also an option if you can get out in the yard or on the porch....
WHAT?
Maybe this is something you already do daily. If so, congrats! I'm jealous. Jealous of your motivation and dedication to taking care of your wellbeing! This is something I'm constantly working on, finding the balance between taking care of me and taking care of my family. The elusive balance we all strive for, right? Now again, depending on the age of your kids, what you do outside by yourself might change. But for me, having small windows of stolen time, I'm thinking coffee on the porch in the morning, star gazing out in the yard at night, a quick walk in the woods if I get extremely lucky! Wouldn't it be great to meditate or repeat a quick mantra outdoors everyday? You figure out what works for you. But those are thoughts that have been running through my head for what I might attempt this week.
WHY?
Is stepping out for brief windows every day for seven days going to make a difference in how we feel? Will it calm us, steady us, give us more patience and gratitude? I don't know. But I'm definitely interested in finding out.
I hope you join me this week!
